Dr. Xiaojun Jin published a technical paper “Membrane penetration of nitrogen and its effects on nitrogen removal in dual-chambered microbial fuel cells” in Chemsphere (IF:7.086), DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chemosphere.2022.134038. In this paper, they reported a novel route of nitrogen removal in a dual-chamber microbial fuel cell (DCMFC) with a proton exchange membrane (PEM). Based on the membrane penetration, the mass transfer coefficients of nitrogen were calculated and nitrogen migration process was further analyzed. Furthermore, the biotransformation process of ammonia nitrogen in MFC was described to reveal the bioelectrochemical denitrification pathway in DCMFC. Meanwhile, the functional microbial communities on the biological electrodes were classified and analyzed. To highlighted, this method of combined membrane infiltration and biotransformation, which provided a new idea for clarifying the mechanism of nitrogen removal in bioelectrochemical systems. Ms Sha Wang is the corresponding author of this study.
